Just got the event details and we are not having much time as the event is going to be held on 20 and 21 of this month. Really the team needs to be decided on the last moments only. Tomorrow

Amazon bought the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) in April 1998.

Amazon bought Cambridge, Massachusetts-based PlanetAll in August 1998 for 800,000 shares of Amazon stock. PlanetAll operated a Web-based address book, calendar, and reminder service. Stupid Britishers

Well, the latest racist slurs against the Bolly-Wood beauty Shilpa Shetty by a stupid Britisher Jade Goody is no topic that needs introduction. It has become an international issue that shows how much superior these whites consider of themselves. Being industrially and technologically advanced doesn't give them the licence to look upon others as inferior. It's time something should be done to curb this racism. But how, I'm still unclear on that. Imagine when Indians of note like Shilpa Shetty, Salman Rushdie are subjected to behaviour not in accordance with the principles of Equality, imagine how how difficult would it be for others. So my dear fellow Indians and others who feel humiliated by the Milky Whites, Join the "We hate Britishers" community on Orkut. This little act of patriotism from you will go a long way in checking the unruly behaviours, Indians outside face occasionally.

Image editing tricks and more ...

You take snaps using your digital camera. Now you wish to transfer them to your computer and upload them on the web. But there is a small hitch : each image is almost 1.5 MB in size. What do you do now ?

Here are a few tips :

Reduce the pixel size of the image -- you dont wanna upload a 2 megapixel image to be viewed by others over the internet. Resize your image to 800X600 resolution, which is a normal image for a 17" monitor. This simple resizing will slash your image size to about 500 KB, if not less.
Go for image compression -- Use an image software to save the image with say, jpeg compression, wherein internally, the software will remove unwanted pixel data. Typically you can reduce your image quality to about 85% of original, without having any perceptible effect to the naked eye of the viewer. And the image which was originally 1.5MB, is now hovering at about 100 KB !!

Orkut Review

Orkut, a online social networking site and an innovation by Google, which has surpassed many of it's rivals(like hi5, Friendster) by a big margin is the latest buzz word of today. First and the foremost reason why it's the No. 1(or maybe no. 2, next to MySpace) is obviosly, speed. It's much faster and simpler than hi5. You have all the tools that you need to stay in touch, make new friends or just pass the time. And that's why I call it a "complete" social networking service. Let's check it out.

Signing-Up:
It's easy. If you've got a gmail account(which almost everyone has), no problems, get going. If not, create one first, and that'll be the username-password for your orkut account too. Next, complete your profile and you're a member of the growing orkut community.
This integration, I'll say, is kind of uncool as signing out from either of them will result in a sign-out from both of them.

Finding Friends:
Check your inbox. There must be many a mails inviting you to join orkut/become friends. Accept them. Now you've some friends. Check their friends network and expand. In the rare case that you don't have any invitations, use their "search" option which is, in my opinion, is useless. Mostly, there are no donuts for us(that means search could not be performed at that moment). Hopes are on that Orkut will fix it ASAP. Anyway, one friend is enough to expand your friends list to several thousand. So, don't worry about that.

Scrapping:
Scrapping, the very "essence" of Orkut, is actually, chatting, with a few differences
- There's only one "window" for all conversations
- It's not private i.e. all the people can view what you and the other person is writing
- All the conversations are saved
- It's fun

Describing friends:
There are two ways to do so. Firstly, you can give them a fan, trusty, cool and/or sexy status. Alternately, or contemporarily, you can also write a testimonial for your friend which is second option.

Communities:
There are so many people on Orkut. Hence, wavelengths and interests are sure to match. To cater to the need of common interests and providing a platform, Orkut has provided an option for communities. A person can create or join a community, and therefore can communicate his/her ideas. You can be part of as many communities as you want. I'm a part of 74 of them!

Photos:
Upload your photo so that the world can see you, and leave comment(s) too. Same as hi5. Notable problem is, once you define a primary photo, or delete one, it takes 1-2 days for the changes to take effect.

Total Fun:
Join Orkut. You're gonna have the blast of a time. If you've ever been on hi5 and loved it, Orkut will be god-like for you. It's addictive.

Like everything else, this service also has it's share of Con's. As said earlier, it's "search" feature is not of much use. Also, changes in photo album take effect after a day or two.
It's "news" and "media" options don't make up for interesting matter and the worst about it is, you can only delete 10 messages at one time, a bane for those(which includes me), who have more than 1000 unread messages in their message box and want to get rid of them. Figuring out who's online and who's not is also a ~~difficult~~ task. Trend is, the person appearing first in the square friends list is online, but then, that's not a sure shot method.

But all said and done, Orkut deserves a 9 out of 10.

AMD64 is five generations ahead of INTEL

It's impossible for me to cover this topic in great detail, so I will hit the key points only.

AMD64 Instruction set

In Feburary 2003, on the eve of AMD's launch of the AMD64 family CPUs, INTEL expressed its disblief. According to Richard Wirt, an INTEL senior fellow, four separate design teams at Intel had examined how the company could take one of its 32-bit chips and transform it into a 64-bit machine, all four Intel teams concluded that such a feat was not doable.

INTEL did try hard to do 64 bit on x86, but their engineering didn't know how.

But the grand masters at AMD did what INTEL thought was impossible. Opteron 64 hit the market in April 2003 and quickly won almost all performance benchmarks.

Seeing is believing, INTEL tried to reverse engineer AMD's instruction set onto Pentium IV and Pentium 4 based Xeon. Emulating AMD64 instruction set was easier on Pentium IV, because it had a 36 bit physical address. However, benchmarks show INTEL's EM64T runs slower under 64 bit mode than 32 bit mode. Moreover, INTEL used some old AMD PDF files, and did a bad job, some Microsoft and Linux code developed on AMD64 failed on run on INTEL's clone. As of today, INTEL's EM64T is still missing some crucial capabilities of AMD64.

But running AMD64 instructions on Pentium III proves to be much harder, as of today, INTEL hasn't yet figured out how to do 64 bit on Pentium M and Core Duo.

And AMD is not sitting idle, it's adding a new set of instructions to the AMD64. INTEL engineers will have more sleepless nights digesting AMD PDFs.

True Multi-core

AMD64 architecture was designed to be true multi-core from the ground up. A multi-core CPU is much like a multi processor system, the cores must communicate with each other to maintain consistency. Inside the AMD64 CPU, there is a crossbar switch that connects the multiple cores together, so they communicate internally and at extremely high speed. We see from benchmarks that dual core Opteron is almost twice as fast as a single core Opteron at the same clock speed.

In comparison, INTEL's dual core implementation is a kludge. In INTEL's design, the two cores share the same FSB, when they need to communicate, they first go out to FSB and come back again, without knowing they are sitting next to each other. The result? Poor performance .

The Embedded Memory Controller

Chip design gurus have long realized that a major bottleneck in system performance is memory latency. Just like memory is much faster than hard disk, the CPU is much faster than memory. When a CPU needs to access memory for instructions or data, it has to wait for the memory content to be retrieved, the time of waiting is the latency. During the waiting period, the CPU can't do anything.

In the old FSB based architecture (all INTEL's), the memory controller is in an external chip called the north bridge, while the CPUs run at 2-3GHZ, the conventional memory controller runs at about 200MHZ. Furthermore, in the old FSB design, the data have to make two hops, from memory to memory controller, then to the CPU. As we can see from this article, memory latency in a Pentium 4 design is between 300 to 400 clock cycles.

In AMD64 design, the memory controller is embedded in the CPU and runs at CPU frequency, the CPU connects directly to the memory without any intermediate. As we can see from this IBM test on single and dual core Opteron, memory latency on the Opteron is only about 50 nano second for local memory access.

Like the Opteron, all modern CPUs, such as Alpha EV7, IBM Power5, SUN UltraSparc T1, AMD Geode LX, Athlon 64, Sempron 64, Turion 64, have embedded memory controller(s).

From INTEL roadmap as far as 2009, we don't see an embedded memory controller design.

Cache Coherent HyperTransport (ccHT)

In a N processor AMD system, since each CPU has its own memory controller and associated banks of memory, there are N memory controllers which provide N times the memory bandwith. To have these N memory controllers act coherently, there are multiple ccHT links between AMD CPUs, which is used for fetching memory from another CPU. As we can see from the IBM document referenced above, in the case of remote memory access, the latency is also quite small.

INTEL is rumored to work on something similar to ccHT called CSI, however, since the cancelation of the Whitefield project, CSI is missing from INTEL's foreseeable roadmap.

Direct Connect Architecture

In FSB based architecture such as INTEL's, the CPU, Memory and I/O share the bandwith of a uni-directional bus, just like many folks share one phone line in a conference call --- only one guy can talk in either direction. In AMD64 architecture (Opteron, Athlon 64, Turion 64, Sempron), there are separate dedicated connections between CPU and Memory, between CPU and I/O, between CPU and CPU, between CPU core and CPU core. In AMD64, there is no crosstalk, and everything is bi-directional--traffic goes both ways the same time.

From INTEL's roadmap, it's stuck with FSB architecture until at least 2009.

Conclusion

INTEL is 5 generations behind AMD, and there are other major areas that INTEL is lacking, such as IOMMU for fast DMA. To match AMD in 2 core performance, INTEL will have to use very large cache size, which will negate its shrink to 65nm. At 4 core and up level, INTEL is simply hopless.

The Bits ‘N’ Bytes, Computer Club of Modern School, Barakhamba Road is organizing its annual computer symposium ‘Access 2006’ on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of December 2006 on the school’s campus. It would give us great pleasure if you could participate in this event by sending your students.

‘Access 2006’ is a two and half day event in which many schools from in and around Delhi participate every year. There are four basic categories in the competition, i.e. the seniors, juniors, sub-juniors & the cadets. A helicopter was flying around above Seattle when an electrical malfunction disabled all of the aircraft's electronic navigation and communications equipment.

Due to the clouds and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter's position. The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, and held up a handwritten sign that said "WHERE AM I?" in large letters. People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign, and held it in a building window. Their sign said "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER."

The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his map, determined the course to steer to SEATAC airport, and landed safely. After they were on the ground, the co-pilot asked the pilot how he had done it.

Moving on indian roads

Finally ,the idea of Frag-Fest 2006 got its approval from Principal Ma'am. So me, Sanchit and Prashanth started the work today itself.

Progress is as follow :

In COMPUTER LAB -

We have installed Unreal Tournament 2000 on 14 computers.
Requirement : 20 computers for First Round .
Problem : Out of the computers connected to LAN , only 14 were working. Others 5-6 Computers were down :-( . Don't Blame ME !!
Solution that can be tried : Pankaj Sir told us that eng. (mechanic) will be coming on sunday morning to repair those computers. So there is a chance. Come on , buck up guys. Work for it. We need more MEN / WOMEN power. Please.

In Chip Lab :

5 computers available for hosting the 2nd Round 'n THE FINALE

Problem : Out of 5 computers , 2 doesn't have network working. 1 doesn't have Good OS ( some crap is coming). Other 2 are working fine.
Solution : All need to help.
We gotta have those 2 computers running on LAN.
We gotta install games on those systems.

I really liked the initiative taken to compile the school's team, but the discussion died down pretty soon. Did you make any plans to recruit? Its not that hard really..

My suggestion is, go to the events, just take along as many as you think should go and participate. Doesn't matter if you win or lose. Don't forget, the present DynamiX core too is really short on experience in participating in events, as far as I remember.. few of you have seen more than 3-4 events, which is really damaging to the clan. So participate, and let the claims of other schools, "DynamiX is dead", motivate you to work harder to improve it and convert it into a consistent performer.

What of the annual DynamiX event? Alright, so that's too ambitious for now, so what about the FragFest? Just conduct it guys, don't ponder over it like Plato!

Frag-Fest 2006

Frag-Fest, the Ramjas R.K.P's annual intra-school competiton to find out the talent in the field of computer gaming is scheduled to be on 9th & 10th August(dates arguable) and the specifications of the same are below

Participation:
- Five students from each section will be chosen on first come first server bases.(arguable)
- 15 seat have been left as Wild card entry to avoid further trouble regarding participation.
- Event is open for classes 8th - 11th.

Day 1
Round 1(Venue: Chip Lab)

Game: Unreal tournament 2003
Time allotted: Zero Period till Recess
Grouping: 15 students per group

Round 2(Venue: Chip Lab)

Game: Need for speed 7
Time Allotted: 1 hr after lunch.
Group: 15 students per group.

Day 2

Round 3(Venue: Intel-Lab)

Game(s): Age of empires 3, Need for Speed Most Wanted, FIFA WC 2006, Unreal Tournament 2004
Time Allotted: 2nd half of Day 2

Theory:
- Last year's Frag-Fest was a failure primarily because of the unmanagable crowd. Hopes are on that this time, we can achieve our targets.
- Easy chucking of new blood from the Dynamix Club will be possible as those who don't qualify for the top five, won't be in the clan.
- If the event is successful, It'll be a major moral boost for the new core-committee.
- Suggestions required regarding the minor details like installing, participants etc etc etc

Note: Till date, no confirmation has come from the P.M.O.(Principal Maam's Office) regarding the event and therefore, sharp turns in the plan can be expected. MIMANSA results

MIMANSA, the annual computer fest of St. Mary's School, Safdarjang Enclave was on today i.e. 28th July 2006 and here's how our school fared -

Crossword & LOGO programming - No Position
Movie Designing - No Position
Programming in C++ - 2nd Position

I know this isn't a very impressive result but is fine to start with. One thing that this fest pushed me most is to compile our scattered school's team to be sent to other school's competitions. Expect a post on this topic soon.

Notes
- St. Mary's school's fest was OK, not very good.
- Only three fields of participation were there i.e. Programming, Movie Designing & Crossword.
- Even in these three fields, only C++ programming was open for seniors(9th - 12th).
- St. Mary's school itself claimed the first prize in Movie making and Crossword. Huh.
- They(St. Mary's) school rejected the first position in Movie Making and settled for the 2nd place as they were the host school.
- Most of the C++ problems that I faced today were copied from somewhere or the other.
- More than 15 schools participated.
- D.P.S. Vasant Kunj went out with the rolling trophy.

Indian Government Censors Us

Several Internet news sites are reporting that the Indian government has sent notices to ISPs to ask them to block several websites, including all blogs on BlogSpot/Blogger.

I can confirm that I cannot access these websites, including DynamiX notes, through my ISP, Airtel Broadband. I contacted technical support, and was told that it was a technical problem, that the Airtel server had blocked blogger.com, and that the problem would be resolved by 1300 on July 18th. I must confess that I fail to see how blocking an entire domain can be a "technical problem." DNS queries for the concerned websites work, and return correct IP addresses, but actually connecting to those IPs fails because no ACK packets are received from the remote site in response to the SYN packet.

Several bloggers have started a Google group in order to discuss this censorship and find ways around it. A ~~wiki~~ wiki is available to share information. Predictably, there is nothing on any of the mainstream news channels about this.

Now on to the important stuff: bypassing this blockage. The simplest solution is to use www.pkblogs.com to read the blog, though this doesn't allow you to post to it. However, I have heard that some ISPs are blocking this website too, though I cannot confirm. Another suggestion in the same vein is to use the Coral Content Distribution Network to access the blog, by appending .nyud.net:8080 to the end of the hostname of the website. For example, this blog can be accessed at http://dynamixnotes.blogspot.com.nyud.net:8080/.

The best solution I can come up with to post on the blog is to use Tor, the onion router. This is how I'm posting this message now, having determined to not sleep until I had done so.

If you are using Ubuntu, or have an Ubuntu Live CD handy, it's as easy as installing the "tor" package (sudo apt-get install tor) and setting Firefox to use localhost:9050 as a SOCKS proxy server. If you are using Windows, your easiest option probably is to use Torpark, a "variant of Portable Firefox with Tor built in" according to Wikipedia. It's as simple as downloading a file and running it.

Keep in mind that the above Tor instructions may not guarantee your privacy, but will at least allow you to access the blocked websites, albeit a bit slowly. I don't really care, as I see nothing immoral in accessing Blogger that I may want to hide from the authorities. In fact, let it serve as a lesson to the government that "the Internet views censorship as damage and routes around it." The only way that they can censor the Internet is to block all access to it. Meanwhile, they are inconveniencing honest users while accomplishing absolutely nothing against those who would put the Internet to nefarious ends.

Update: Posting to blogs is not blocked, only reading them. You can still access the blogger.com site, just not individual blogs, at least on Airtel.

Microsoft has STOPPED support for Win 98

That's the worst thing of using any closed source software. Support (does anyone require for win98?) and security updates can be stopped anytime by the company, leaving many helpless. Though it doesn't matter much to those using pirated stuff, those using licensed copies are the ones most hit. They are forced to buy the new versions, if they want to continue use of the closed source software and use genuine copies as well.

Google Toolbar makes it to the list of one of the few useful & trusted application(s), that net users around the world love to integrate their web-browser with. And why shouldn't it be the case? With such a simple design and many a tools-that-you-can't-live-without-with, this naturally makes it the preferred choice among all the web-page hoppers.
Needless to say, it's free, and safe. It is detected neither as an Adware, nor a SpyWare from all the recommended apllications that you can hope to see around - Microsoft Anti-Spyware, Norton Anti-Virus-2006, Yahoo Anti-Spyware. Answering to the general curosity of almost all the concerned online Ramjasians, I'd like to inform the people that our domain name, theoretically, has already been renewed for a span of 1 year and will be up in the very first week of July.

Here is a small set of changes that has to be made to make your firefox browser upto ten-eleven- times faster.

1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit enter. Scroll down and look for the following entries(Go alpha-vise. Therefore, go straight to "N"):

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

Try this and you can see the difference.

This thing actually increases your FireFox speed or you can say your browsing speed over internet. "NOT YOUR INTERNET SPEED". It will make more and more internet resources to concentrate on Mozilla FireFox.

Owing to the fact that July, August & September are the competition months of the year, I propose that the Dynamix activities should be confined to the above stated months.

Now, the list of events in alpha order is

* Initiation of Tech-Ed(Definitely July, no questions)

I very well can sense that the list ended as soon as it started, but I wanted to be kind of practical keeping in mind the present manpower & resources conditions of the clan. If anyone wants to suggest, add or contribute, I'd welcome the idea anyway.

Tech Ed was a project that DynamiX was working on last year.It was supposed to be a technology newsletter for students of our school.There were ambitious plans of having
a print version apart from an online version.
But the plans never materialized.This project as abandoned in its infancy mainly because all the three developers including me were in board classes and had no time to develop and maintain this newsletter.
This year DynamiX can still take on this project.But development does not seem as big a challenge to me as keeping the newsletter alive.If we make this as a newsletter for our school I doubt there'd be enough contribution and support from the students to keep the newsletter alive.Now I have a different idea.What if we collaborate with computer clans of other schools and make Tech ED a tech newsletter for schools across Delhi.
We develop Tech Ed with or without the help of students of other schools.Then we contact Computer Clans of other schools and ask them to join.There is an editorial team of Tech ED in each school.It is the responsibility of each team to publicise Tech Ed in their respective schools,collect articles from their students(And maybe even teachers),edit them and then publish them in this newsletter.
I know this sounds too big but this is just the basic idea which is open to suggestions and changes.Students of other clans visiting this blog are welcome to comment too.

Illustrator Summer Workshop - Review

Planned Statistics

Date - 22 May 2006
Time - 8:30 A.M.
Venue - Intel Lab, Ramjas School, R.K.Puram

Approximately 45 minutes after the scheduled time, the workshop started with initially 12 people(2 joined in later). Many factors contributed to the delay
- Late personalities
- Projector
- Computers

There was some deviation from the "planned thought" as the software wasn't installed on any machine except one, and therefore, there was no way by which the students could apply, then and there, what they've learnt. Although Uma, the teacher out there, was ready to stay back and supervise after the class, if someone wanted to try their hands on Illustrator.

Anyway, the workshop wasn't solely about Illustrator but on vector graphics in general. The first half an hour was devoted to explain the pros & cons(mostly pros) of the graphics represented in co-ordinates as compared to graphics represented in pixels. After that came the technicalities of Illustrator, about which I must say, Uma had fared pretty well, much better than what I was expecting. I think she can take up few more 'shop's like these in the future. The proceedings were followed by a 10-minute break which extended to more than 30 minutes. And then came the last half hour in which the 'shop was winded up. Refreshment(a bottle of slice), was served in between.

Few things that need a mention are :-
-> Uma's methodility to teach(which as I said earlier, was excellent)
-> Prashanth's abily to grasp things and ask doubts
-> Somsubhro's ability to disturb :-)

The macroscopic events after the workshop were :-
* Discussion regarding the ventures of Dynamix in the present academic year(about which I'll write later).
* An in-Formal chat with Principal ma'am & Pandey Sir.

Final Verdict - A nice venture to start with. I'll award the workshop an 8/10.

Summer Workshop

Wanted to tell something to all the present school-going Dynamix Members. This workshop is very very very important for us. There's a quote saying "First impression is the last impression". And this venture, being the first one after the "biggies" has left out, is an opportunity, and a necessity too, for us to make it big.
But unfortunately, things are not moving according to my plan. Not even 30% of the planning has been done and what I can figure out is an disappointed Uma(Link). Huh. Now, if we want to make this event really upto the mark(which none of the Dynamix event by now has been), kindly pay heed to what I say.

My points regarding the event:
Subject:
My opinion is, rather than tutoring the Illustrator, why not go for the famous Photo-shop. Everyone knows this application, at least, and I think many a people will be interested if we plan to impart the grass-root level knowledge of the software. It is not just an suggestion, it is an important too. I have talked to my fellow classmates and not surprisingly, 100 percent of them(whom I asked) has voted for the photoshop.

Date:
Although 90% chances are those of 20th may, but please confirm it to me.

Venue:
Very important. In these scorching summmers, no one would like to burn. Therefore, an air-conditioned lab is a must. Tell me which one you would go for?

Strength:
Again, very important. Unlike Pandey Sir, strength matters the most. We are not conducting this event just to have it quoted in the achievements section of the Dynamix catalogue(ever heard of it?). Tell me well in advance, how much students you would like to take care of?

Answer these three very basic and very important questions first. And then, I'll let you know more of my plans based upon your replies. Revert back ASAP.

Google Doodles or Logos

While I was just browsing internet , I came across a new term Google Doodles. I have been hearing about this term since long time back but didn't knew much about it. You might have seen them but didn't notice much about them yourself. Every time on a holidays or on major event like New year(for different religions), Halloween, Olympics and blah blahs, you see them as the banner of Google.com . Though use of them by any other website is prohibited but they are mind-blowing. Good-use of art. I thought you would like to know more about it.

Google.com has had several logos since its renaming from "BackRub". Some of them can be seen on Google's Holidaylogos

The Google also includes various modifications or humorous features, such as cartoon modifications, of their logo for use on holidays, birthdays of famous people( like ME ha ha ha) , etc. These have become known as Google Doodles. They are displayed on the day of the occasion, and then removed and archived( That means they are not deleted but kept for public veiwing, later on). Google Doodles were first initiated in 1999 for the Burning Man Festival and various other holidays. The tradition has continued to this day, with 167 different Doodles as of February 2005. These logos(the font design) also reflects a fictional or humorous language .

The Google logo was designed by Ruth Kedar, and is set in the Catull typeface.

"The Code Breakers" on BBC World

The BBC World service is airing a two-part documentary on how Free and Open Source software is helping the world, called The Code Breakers (more articles). I'm in the middle of watching the first part and it is reasonably fair and balanced. Each part is half-an-hour long. I highly recommend it to anybody with an interest in the future of computing. Planning of workshop currently are handled by UMA and Sid.( I may request them to have it final with dates and time).

April's gone and yet the list of Dynamites stays stagnant? I don't mean to interfere now that I'm not a member anymore, but I think the club ought to get new recruits if it has to be competitive. The months following re-opening: July, August & Sept are the competition-months, and DX has to improve its image from being considered inconsistent & maverick to consistent winners, if still maverick. Being maverick is often a good thing, as it means that people expect you to be innovative and different.

Workshops are the second best way to identify talent and the best way is to hold talent searches. Sid was working on a Logic Search competition right? What happened to it?

And someone invite Shakti Mehra to this blog too, and ask Prashanth to make his debut here. Kislay Pandey of 8C (He was in 7C when FragFest was on) is a talented gamer, and should be brought in. He will be able to allow DX to gain a foothold in the junior class segment and groom budding talents so that a couple of years down the line, DX will have a number of competitive talents. Involve the juniors, you need patience but it always pays. And you should think about holding more intra-school competitions. Don't tie them with House competitions.. they're biased and useless.

Apple. Now in Ansal Plaza.

The post, immidiately below this one, compelled me to describe the newly opened Apple's showroom in Ansal Plaza, New Delhi, India. Here I go:
It's a spacious, gracious & strategically located(keeping in mind, the circular Ansal Plaza) shop with almost all the new & latest from Apple. As soon as you enter the place, the clean & marvellous white colour makes you admire the atmosphere around, for a while. Then as you start moving around the almost empty shop, iPods catch your eyes the first, and then, the new & original expensive softwares like Adobe, Coral, Norton etc, and then, at last, you see the real thing. The adorable G4 note-books & equally lovable Desktop machines. It was a nice experience for me to work for the first time on Mac & the Mighty Mouse. Doubly so because the fresh air by their powerful AC's, directly in front of my face, added to my mood. The extra-ordinarily customer-friendly staff, which were not ready to accept that Windows & Linux are better than Mac, took an hour(rather more than that) & explained me almost all the Milky White machine, its whereabouts, its compatibility & all the other blah related to it.
It was good to hear, & simultaneously see that Windows & Mac could exist together on a single machine. The experience out there of mine with Mac was fantastic. The only thing not "good" was their cost factor. I'm waiting for the next 2-3 years from now on. As soon as the price(s) go down, I'll immidiately be up with an Apple of my eye.

Somtimes, I feel like giving a best-of-luck mail to the company, but the very next moment I think that, what they will do with it?

As all of us might be aware that very recently our blog suffered an blogger outage and was given an outlook, it had 6 months ago. I was waiting for the other admins to correct that, but it seems that the task has not been performed upto the perfection. Therefore, I am stepping in to get back the blog to its original state.
Now, the reason why I am writing this post is that the other members should leave the pending changes(which I am missing out) as comments to this post as soon as possible. I'll do the rest.

Any preliminary thoughts about the DX 2k6?

Let's talk about this over our email thread.. but this is just to get the ball rolling, so to say.

We've got to learn from our mistakes, so:
DX 2k5:

Our first event ever, so was a bit chaotic and certain unforeseen things happened, crossword questions were not prepared in advance etc.

DX 2k5 Respawned:

Being right in the middle of the rush all through, I think it went off just fine, not to the "Great Expectations" but it just went by fine. Only glaring issue was with the Quiz system. We tried to innovate with a challenge-based prelim rounds having 1-on-1 five minute rounds. The idea was nice and well planned, but when the time came, no team wanted to challenge. And when finally a few did challenge, all except 3 teams found the questions way above their league. And simple questions like identifying the Tux (mascot-thing of Linux) were real tough ones for them.

Another minor issue was that only 4 teams entered for programming as it was on RoboCode using Java, and despite our best assuarances, most teams got scared and didn't send any programmers.

Obviously now all the ground-level work will have to be done by you guys, we're well and out. Maybe we can help with questions etc..

Whatever format this event may take, let's keep in mind that DX events should always be innovative. If we are going to host Yet Another Run-of-the-Mill Event, then there's no point hosting it in the first place. But as we learnt from DX-Respawned, we need to keep reality in view and plan for all eventualities.

Illutrator Summer Workshop

This idea has been in my mind for quite some time now.I have seen a general ignorance about Vector drawing applications like Illustrator among the members of our clan.So I'd like to conduct a workshop on Illustrator, preferably in may.There will be no fixed curriculum. To what depth I delve into the topic would depend on the response I get from the participants.Participation is the only problem I see right now.Pankaj sir felt that it should be made compulsory for
the dynamites and students from the Graphics and Animation club should be invited . But with the school closing in another day or two, it's to late to contact the Graphics Club and with the entrence exams going on I do not see a point in forcing anybody to come.I want genuinely intrested people to attend this workshop.
I request Siddarth and Tarun to contact any of their classmates/fellow dynamites who are intrested in graphics.I also ask the ex-core group and other dynamites to participate if they can . I will keep in mind the schedule of the entrence exams before I finalise a date.
I'd welcome any suggestions regarding this topic.

Sorry to jump over Roshan's nice post (Vista's nothing without its key features.. just a new WindowBlinds theme), but something's going wrong in this blog. Roshan and I both noticed something wrong in the blog template editor in the admin last night. It was only showing half the code and had one Google Analytics post inside the template, whereas the template does not contain any real posts.. just markup. So it appears to be a blogger outage, so please bear with some issues.

Roshan's reverted to an older template for now. I think along with just mentioning the changes in the template code, each admin should sign his/her changes with name and time+date of modification (Use Indian ST, but if possible use the timeanddate.com IST to ensure standard time). Mention each and every change, and just paste the entire code into a txt document and save it in your computer. This will ensure that we will be able to track back to the problem in these kind of situations.

Once every admin's seen this post (comment by saying that you have), we can push this post down by changing the time and allow the real posts to come over. Don't delete this post.

Paul Thurrott, of WinSuperSite fame, confirms what many of us have realised for some time: Microsoft has let down its fans with Windows Vista.

This is especially surprising coming from Mr. Thurrott, if you've followed his past writings. Reading his review, I have lost whatever little interest I had in Vista née Longhorn. Despite Microsoft's marketing, they'll find it difficult to exceed Windows XP, which in turn built upon the venerable Windows 2000. After Windows 98 and (the horror!) ME, Win2k came as a breath of fresh air.

However Microsoft's marketing team is good at, shall I say, elevating hype above the bounds of dreary reality; I shall not be surprised if Vista becomes a roaring success.

P.S. Think again if you're thinking of pirating Windows Vista (not necessarily a bad thing, eh landlubber?) to try its oh-so-beeyootiful (!?!?) Aero-Glass interface.

My packet of Ubuntu Linux all the way from France arrived today. And minutes after I receieved it, I put the CD's inside the packet, to use. And very soon, I was working on the new, free OS I had just receieved.
Now, don't expect me to write another review of the same as they are many, readily available on cyber-space. Click here to have a look at one of them(reviews).

After working, using, feeling the new OS, I was pondering over, or you can say, admiring the supremacy of Windows XP. I just couldn't think of a reason, why people use or switch over to other OS's when an ultimte master-piece is in front of them. Rather than not being a free affair, is there any other fault in it? Even that is not a problem. Most of us get it approximately for nill(pirated version). So, according to me, sit down, enjoy your present product from microsoft and there's no need to look for anything else till september(Vista expected).

Next time you intend to send a mail through Yahoo, get ready for an intermediate step - word verification. It is such a basic, easy, simple and effective way to check spam, I wonder why it is being introduced so lately?
Although, it'll now take you a minute more(or maybe less, depends upon your eyes) to have your mail reaching its destination, but this con can be well swallowed by the fact that its share of pros is much larger than its -ve's. God bless Yahoo.

A very clean, fresh, user-friendly yet powerful application. A user can immidiately start using it without looking at the Help even once. With search criteria nicely classified in to 5 categories, a classy interface and themes to work with, this software is worth being the no. 1, and it is. Also its the world's fastest growing file sharing program.

Unlike the other programs on P2P concept(like I-Mesh), this one doesn't require you to Sign-Up or Log-In to use their services. It only takes you, a net connection to get going. It has got support for many languages, rather many many of them. Hence, one small 4.5 mb setup file covers all the globe. Its Adult-Content-Filter also deserves a mention, if not a detail.

Also there's a small progress bar at the search window which opens when you are looking for something. And this functionality, according to me, is the best one which caters to the users general sense of patience. My personal experience says that if the progress bar has reached the half of this length, and there's nothing up on the screen, give up hope to expect something in the other half. Instead, try a different name or a different file altogether :-)

A great deal of satisfaction is also offered along with this master-piece by monitoring all the incoming and outgoing traffic. If you are not happy with one, or two or maybe couple of them, simply block them(through a firewall).

Everything has its own positives/negatives and broadband has its own share of them. Positives, all we know. The negatives, probably the only negative that broadband un-willingly gifts us is the "loss of net activity"(I hate it for that). And if you suffer from this problem, then Lime-Wire has something to offer you. Its What's-New service. Click on the "What's-New" button, see the recently uploaded files displayed. Get lost again into the wonderful world of internet. Enjoy.

As already said, everything has its own positives/negatives, and this program too has a darker side. Although one can easily be comfortable with this program, but if he/she is not, lime-wire is not there to help off-line. Maybe lime-wire loves bytes, coming and going.

Also Lime-Wire is a serious security threat to your PC, if you love high speeds. Traditional downloading is three times faster than Lime-Wire, if Fire-Wall is in action. The result, most people shut down their walls, and hence, open up the threat doors.

Lime-Wire's Licence Agreement says that it does not account for any spyware or adware along with it. But a scan by Yahoo anti-spy challenges the agreement by identifying it as an adware. Consequences: Users in dilemma.

Another Flaw: Files exceeding 30 letters is not a cup of tea for this P2P program. And this thing sucks when you are for ill-named drivers and the like.
Rest is fine.

One thing that's bothering me since the first day of my relationship with this program is my inability to classify a service of its namely "Direct-Connect" into a positive or a negative. Using this service, one can directly access the files of another machine if its IP address is known. What do you people say?

An upcoming version of Firefox will include protection against phishing scams, using technology that might come from Google.

The phishing shield is a key new security feature planned for Firefox 2, slated for release in the third quarter of this year, Mozilla's Mike Shaver said in an interview on Tuesday.

Shaver, a technology strategist at the company which oversees Firefox development, said: "Everybody understands that phishing is a significant problem on the web. We are putting anti-phishing into Firefox, and Google is working with us on that."

Username(s)/Password(s) Woes.

Having a relationship with computer(s) and internet for more then 1-2 years, leaves you with one thing for sure. Lots of user-names and pass-words. The exact number depends on the duration of a person's date with the machine. And that's quiet natural too. If you are repeatedly expecting services from a service provider like E-Mail, blogging you need to have a permanent foot-mark out there which only an "account" can provide. Username and the corresponding password, are only the keys to access that "account". But it's no less than a brain-transplant-surgery to remember them. Requires a lot of grey area which most of us, don't have in excess ;-)

Scenario: During the moments I've spent in front of the monitor, I have accumulated 44, and increasing, number of accounts and equal number of passwords in my share of things which are to be remembered always. But, un-fortunately, as I am not from mars, I used to constantly forget the two hand-in-hand keys. So, I jotted all of those which I remembered, on seperate .txt files and packed all of them in a folder. Encrypting the folder has a different story altogether written below. Read on...

Encryption: It was and is, an stepwise affair
1) I password protected the master folder through Win-Zip.
2) Having placed this .zip file into an mountable virtual drive, I password-protected it too, using Paragon Encrypted Disk.
3) Placed the resultant .crd file far into a C:/Windows directory and that too hidden.
4) Kept quiet about it.

@God: Please make sure that no-one, literally no-one gets past my 4-cycle security system.

Apple Computer Inc. on Wednesday confirmed that it has embedded in OS X a poem that warns hackers against stealing the Mac operating system.

The poem's existence was reported online by the OSx86 Project, a site dedicated to all things technical related to OS X on the Intel platform. Apple recently started shipping desktop computers and notebooks with Intel Corp.'s processors.

The poem reads:

"Your karma check for today: There once was a user that whined his existing OS was so blind, he'd do better to pirate an OS that ran great but found his hardware declined. Please don't steal Mac OS! Really, that's way uncool. (C) Apple Computer Inc."

Apple confirmed that the poem was embedded in the OS by developers.

"We can confirm that this text is built into our products," the company said in an email. "Hopefully it, and many other legal warnings, will remind people that they should not steal Mac OS X."

Google was set to launch Gmail Chat on Monday, which will let users send instant messages with one click from their e-mail account, see when contacts are online and save the chat history like an e-mail message, reports CNet. Gmail Chat is available on Internet Explorer 6.0 and higher, and Firefox 1.0 and higher, and in the US English interface only.While the chat functions of Google Talk are integrated into Gmail, users must download the Google Talk client application to make voice calls.

Note: this post was originally intended as a comment to the previous post (by Ayush.) However, I thought I'd make it a post in its own right because it got a bit long and copyright is one of those things that are hazy to a lot of people and yet important in the modern world. Read it as if it were addressed to Ayush, even though it contains nothing specific about him or the blog.

You don't need a license to sue people. If you write something and don't mention anything about a license, it defaults to "all rights reserved". Nobody then has the right to copy it.

Most people, by not mentioning any license for content they create, default to "all rights reserved." This is bad for society as a whole as more and more content gets locked up, so the Creative Commons was created to give people an alternative, for everybody's benefit. You can put your content under a less restrictive "some rights reserved" CC license to allow the creation of a "commons" of art and literature (makes me chuckle in the context of our blog) that people can use as a basis for their own works. The CC allows you to fill out a form specifying what kind of use you want to allow, and generates a tailor-made license.

You seem to have chosen a very restrictive license (Attribution Required, Non-Commercial Use Only, and No Derivative Works allowed.)

I would suggest using a more open license, because if you are going to use such a restrictive license, you may as well not use any license at all. Remember, as I explained above, licenses are used to give rights, not to take them away. Without a license, your readers only have fair-use rights. With a license you can give them any rights you want.

Keep in mind that however restrictive the license is, people still have the fair-use rights. They can copy content for excerpts in reviews, parodies (making fun of us), personal use, etc. Nothing can take away fair-use rights.

Whatever license you put on the content, you are still its owner. You are free to change the license at any time. However, by specifically stating so, you can put your work in the public domain, which means that nobody owns it, and anybody can do with it whatever they'd like.

The extension to this is that you can only put a license on content if you are the owner. Since blog posts are owned by the authors, you need to get permission from all of them to put on a license. This is a worthwhile goal, since if we all agree to use a more open license for our content, we'll be doing a tiny bit (very, very tiny) to create a public commons of knowledge and art.

Think of this as a first attempt to introduce the basis of copyrights. Please see other sources for more information, as everything in this post is not guaranteed to be accurate. As always, don't trust a single source for any information.

They have built upon the "all rights reserved" of traditional copyright to create a voluntary "some rights reserved" copyright. They are a nonprofit organisation.

Setup new team?

Okay, I think you guys should try to actively get new people into the clan, even the core group. As it stands, I see more people in the Alumni section (excluding Anshuman and Deepak) than in the Dynamites list (excluding Pandey Sir & Pankaj Sir). This is not a very healthy situation. I know that for the non-board students this is the final examination time, so what you can do is to spread via word of mouth that the old DynamiX people are gone and the DynamiX brand is represented by new people. Tell them that it means a completely different DynamiX, a more dynamic DynamiX in a matter of speaking. So list of people whom you'd want in the core, and the people whom you'd want to join DX. Sometimes some people use computers quite regularly, know some stuff about it, but aren't quite technical people.. programmers, gamers etc. They form a very valuable portion of the non-core group as they can be trusted to handle computers during events, and otherwise too.

Also, try to get more people as they join the clan to join the blog too. The idea of the blog is NOT to publish Firefox tips and tricks and be a general entertainment forum, but to be a means of talking to the clan. The tips and tricks, tech news etc are just means to keep the blog alive when the activity level is low (like during exams.. now). Talk to and reach out to as many people as you can in the school.

Dynamix Respawned-Not Symposium But Clan

Un-Officially though, but it can be well announced that the present commitee of the Dynamix Clan has dissolved. Everything that was possible by a hand-ful of students in contributing towards creating a community of like-minded people has been done above the potential. Only because of Dynamix, our school is into the process of becoming a reputed one in terms of computers, technology and the students too.

All the senior serious members deserve a sincere thank you, of-course from the students and from the school too. Some of their concrete achievements are :-
* Organised Symposia(twice)
* Maintained our school website
* Held Work-shop(s)
* Brought many a trophies for school
* Organised gaming competiton(Frag-Fest)
* Pushed(not exactly!) other tech people into this community and so on...

Now the thing is, in march, all of them retires. All of them are through with their duties. After a two-year close parental relationship with Dynamix, they are parting away. Their role has ended. The series is over for them. In short, their era has ended. They are stepping into a totally different world of college life. A very best of luck to you all. May you succeed in whatever you do.

This is a post-of-assurance for the departing(no wrong intended!) members. In this post, on behalf of all the "fresh-blood" taking over, I am promising you all of a more active, better, sexier(yes seriously!) and a more focussed clan. All the activities that previous batch couldn't carry out(like departments), will be completed by us in success. New ideas, which an integral requirement of a clan like those of ours, will be thought of and worked upon. I am sure you are not, but the following few lines are for those who are worried, along with being concerned about the future of the clan. I would like to say that there is absolutely no need to take "not-required-tensions". The new team in place, is all set to except the challenge. Things will be shaked up at the Dynamix. Anything & Everything possible by the new hand-ful of boys/girls making up the team Dynamix will be done above potential as you guys have done. May god bless us.
